He rented a 6,000 square-foot building that was once a television assembly plant. At that time, there were only three employees, including Adams, and the company had a single innovative product: a 12-degree driver made of stainless steel. This new metalwood had a different appearance and sound compared to wooden woods, but most importantly, it performed exceptionally well. The clubhead's perimeter-weighting provided more forgiveness on off-center hits, while the lower center of gravity made it easier to launch the ball into the air. Adams, who was the son of a golf professional, insisted that TaylorMade clubs maintained a traditional and genuine look and feel that true golfers appreciated. The low-profile head of our iron has a shallow face height and a wide sole with a large step-down, keeping the center of gravity low for easier launch. Additionally, the increased sole curvature helps with turf interaction. Our multi-material Cap Back Design combines high-strength stainless steel with lightweight polymers to maximize distance, forgiveness, and feel, all while maintaining an extremely low center of gravity. Inside the iron head, our ECHO Damping System utilizes a soft polymer blend and multiple contact points across the face to reduce harsh vibrations, resulting in a forged-like feel.
